Why choose Toowong Orthodontics

We offer the benefits of being at only the one practice location.

We have chosen to concentrate our efforts at the one practice location in the convenient Brisbane inner city suburb of Toowong.

This is important for patients as it means that we have all our latest high quality equipment available at all times at the location that you attend. It means that all your records and charts are available at the one location for when we need to access them for your treatment.

It also means that you can always see the Orthodontist of your choice in the one place. This is an important consideration when some treatments can take up to 18 months or more.

Most orthodontic practices have multiple suburbs that they visit, sometimes only once or twice a fortnight.

Therefore if you have a breakage or emergency they will generally ask you to travel to another suburb where the Orthodontist is working on that particular day.

What is a SomnoDent?

SomnoDent is an Oral Sleep Apnea Appliance consisting of two removable dental plates, which work together to advance the lower jaw. The Appliance is custom made to fit your mouth and should be worn at night whilst you are sleeping.

What is Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

OSA is a Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) condition which occurs during sleep, due to the narrowing or total closure of the airway.
When your airway is narrow, you or your partner may notice that you snore.

Snoring is often no greater problem than the noise itself. However, loud snoring may be a sign of a more serious problem – Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

OSA occurs when the airway becomes completely blocked and breathing stops. The brain then detects the lack of oxygen and prompts a momentary arousal to draw breath. Although OSA sufferers may experience hundreds of apnea episodes per night, they are unlikely to remember any of them. In fact, if the sufferer lives alone or sleeps separately they may not be aware of their condition, even after many years.

4.2 million people in Australia have a Sleep Disordered Breathing Condition
Up to 80% of these people remain undiagnosed
OSA is a serious health condition.

How do I know if I have OSA?

If you:
• Feel unrefreshed upon waking
• Feel sleepy during the day
• Cannot concentrate and retain information

then you may have OSA.

At Toowong Orthodontics, we work closely with Sleep Physicians and will happily refer you to one for a Sleep Study. A Sleep Study is the only way to really know if you have sleep Apnoa.

I think I may have insomnia…
When you can’t sleep properly, its easy to get sleep conditions confused. Patients often complain of insomnia but the only way to be sure which sleep condition you have, is to see a Sleep Physician.

How does SomnoDent work?

Orthodontists fit and adjust oral appliances every day of their professional working day! So an orthodontist is ideally suited to construct, fit and adjust the SomnoDent Appliance giving you the assurance of knowing that you are getting the maximum from your appliance.

Using an adjustment key, the SomnoDent can be gradually adjusted to bring your lower jaw forward, opening up your airway until it gets to the right spot. We will show you how to do this at home, should you need to.

Is SomnoDent comfortable?

The SomnoDent allows you to open and close your mouth, which means you can talk or drink with the appliance in position. If you are thinking of travelling the SomnoDent is very convenient taking very little space.

Because SomnoDent is custom made to fit your mouth, you will find the appliance to be surprisingly comfortable and discreet. You will find that you’re used to wearing the device after about a week.

Is SomnoDent the right treatment for me?

If you suffer from mild to moderate OSA the SomnoDent should benefit you. If your OSA is classed as severe and you cannot tolerate other recommended treatments, then speak to your Sleep Physician about trying the SomnoDent.
